Biking Andalucia - the best mountain biking in Spain

Summer 2007 high altitude mountain biking programme

Programme outline

Following the success of the Summer high altitude mountain biking programme in 2004, 2005 and 2006 (see report for 2004 ) we will be running it again between June and mid-September in 2008.

Cycling at this altitude means we can avoid the worst of the heat and has the additional advantage of raising your red blood cell count, and therefore your fitness levels.

The majority of the rides will be at over 2000 metres altitude, culminating in a ride to the top of Pico Veleta - mainland Spain's second highest mountain at 3400 metres (10,300 feet) - and a 3100metre (10,300 ft.) descent to Orgiva.

We will spend 2 nights at the " Refugio Poqueira" at 2,500 metres. This a very comfortable refiugo, with bar, restaurant, reading room, kitchen and sun terraces, with dormitory type bedrooms - a fantastic place to stay. The other nights will be spent at our base in Orgiva.

Typical ride programme

Day 1 Transfer from Malaga Airport to Orgiva. Assemble, and short ride to test the bikes.
Day 2 Vehicle transfer to Capileira (1500 metres altitude). Incredible 15 km single track high level ride (at 2,000 metres). Return to Orgiva.
Day 3 Vehicle transfer to Capileira (1500 metres altitude). Bike up to the Refugio Poqueir at 2,600 metres, involve biking up to 2,800 metres, stay overnight at the Refugio Poqueira.
Day 4 Bike up to the Veleta Pass at 3400 metres, and return to the Refugio Poqueira for a second night.
Day 5 Bike down to Capileira at 1500m, followed by a circular route, then a technical descent into Orgiva.
Day 6 Day off. You can visit the Orgiva market, chill out around the pool, visit Granada and the Alhambra Palace, or go off on the bike on your own.

Day 8 Return transfer to Malaga Airport.
