Biking Andalucia: the best cycling holidays in Andalucia

About the area

Sierra Nevadas

The Sierra Nevada, designated a national park in 1998 is a dramatic, rugged and extensive mountain range, the highest in Europe after the Alps. The protected area encompasses 86,208ha of torrential rivers, sheer-sided gorges, stony scree slopes, glacial lakes between snowy summits and, in the foothills of the Alpujarras, cultivated terraces of almond trees and vegetables. An ideal biking destination with its 325 days of sunshine, scenery and routes.

The Alpujarras

Las Alpujarras is Spain's southernmost range of mountains and includes Europe's longest downhill. Dominated by the Sierra Nevada mountain range with it's highest peaks Pico Veleta and Mulhacen reaching over 3400 metres above sea level, Las Alpujarras is part of the Sierra Nevada National Park and one of the UNESCO biosphere reserves. The mountain range has been compared to the Himalayas, and offers some of the most stunning landscapes in Europe.

The breathtaking scenery coupled with the superb reliable climate (325 days of sunshine per year) make Las Alpujarras the perfect biking destination. It is an ideal Winter, Spring and Autumn cycling destination. We are based in Orgiva, the capital of the Alpujarras.

The trails are unpopulated and it is unusual for us to meet any walkers or mountain bikers on our rides. The characteristic feel is of a tranquil region with villages that time has passed by. The biking area extends from Orgiva (at 400 metres altitude) up to Pico Veleta at 3400 metres, from banana plantations, orange and lemon groves, olive groves, oak , pine forests to alpine type pasture and snow capped Sierra Nevada, an incredible diversity. There is an abundance of wild life, including deer, wild boar, vultures, buzzards and eagles. This area provides a magnificent backdrop for a varied an exciting week of biking.

Our cortijo (traditional Spanish farmhouse) is besides the Rio Chico and is set in 2 acres of olive, orange, lemon and fig trees, has a swimming pool, and is within walking distance of Orgiva.

Orgiva is a fascinating market town (population 6000) and is known as the capital of the Alpujarras. There are various bars serving good and reasonable priced meals. There are also many shops, including petrol stations, post office, Internet Cafe, banks (cash machine), and the lively market on Thursdays.

Orgiva and the surrounding Alpujarras is an enchanting area, and is an excellent centre for exploring by car, walking, horse trekking, paragliding or just simply relaxing. The pleasant coastal resort of Salobreña is only 30km away.
