Biking Andalucia - Rides

Biking Andalucia is based in the Las Alpujarras, in the foot hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains of southern Spain and offers excellent riding for road and off-road cyclists. Due to the climate it is an ideal Winter, Spring and Autumn cycling destination.

We offer a one week package of guided mountain bike rides, utilising our local knowledge to show you the best of the area (see Bookings for prices and a typical week's cycling itinerary for details).

Alternatively, an accommodation only package can be taken for self led groups. This would suit road cyclists where local knowledge is less important. A guide can be booked when required (see Bookings for prices).

Type of terrain

The area is without doubt a biker's paradise, offering all types of trails from gentle routes following river beds, dry and flowing to testing cross country rides up to the Pico Veleta Pass at 3400 metres. It is possible to do a 3000 metre descent in less than 3 hours! There are a myriad of forestry tracks up to 2000 metres.

Our accumulated knowledge of routes allows us to show you a wide range of challenging scenic rides you would otherwise fail to encounter without guided assistance. We also know the best lunch stops and over night stops, when required. Our local knowledge takes the hassle out of organising trips allowing you to fully enjoy the region. Also the roads are superb for road cycling, with good road surfaces and fantastic scenery.

Level of fitness required

Little off-road cycling experience is required, though reasonable fitness is necessary.

Daily distances

Daily distances vary, taking into account such factors as terrain, amount of climbing, altitude, refreshments and photo stops. Typical daily distances range from 35 to 60 km /day depending on the trip.

Choice of riding days

The weekly itinerary includes a day off. We will endeavor to be flexible regarding all our client's needs.

A typical riding day

We normally aim to be ready to begin the ride around 10.00 am. after breakfast and any bike preparation that is necessary. The nature of the day will depend on the type of ride. For example for a down hill ride we will use a vehicle to take us up to the higher reaches of the Sierra Nevada. Some days are part of a two day excursion form Orgiva and other days are circular rides from Orgiva. A guide will ride with the group pointing our places of interest on the route. Along the route there will be photo and refreshment stops. On some routes there will be vehicle support. We aim to return to Orgiva by 5.00 pm. which should allow time for a swim, prior to evening meal.

Why guided rides

The Alpujarras has a myriad of trails, which are not well mapped. A knowledge of these routes has been built up allowing bikers to get the most out of the incredibly diverse vegetation and scenery and co-ordinate the ride with refreshment stops, which would be difficult to find without guided assistance and local knowledge. On certain rides there will be vehicle back up.
